INTEGRATED ECOSYSTEM SERVICES VALUATION FOR CONSERVATION AREA MANAGEMENT, CARBON SEQUESTRATION, ECOTOURISM, AND BIODIVERSITY VALUES IN A REHABILITATED MINING LANDSCAPE

Tahura Lati Petangis represents a unique case of ecosystem restoration in a former coal mining area (2,017.53 ha of 3,445.37 ha total area) in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan. This study employs an integrated Total Economic Value (TEV) framework to comprehensively assess ecosystem services, combining multiple valuation methods: Market Price Method for biodiversity resources, Individual Travel Cost Method for ecotourism, carbon sequestration valuation through international carbon markets, benefit transfer for erosion prevention, and Contingent Valuation Method for non-use values. Results demonstrate a total economic value of Rp961.43 billion, with indirect use values (primarily carbon sequestration at Rp885.86 billion) contributing 92.97%, followed by direct use values (Rp24.29 billion, 2.53%), and non-use values (Rp43.32 billion, 4.50%). The area supports 171 tree species with biomass of 775.48 tons, sequestering 1,005,749.88 tons of carbon. Biodiversity assessment identified 20 mammal species, 92 bird species, and 62 insect species with an estimated economic value of Rp873.42 million. Ecotourism generates significant economic benefits with 4,111 visitors (2024) and a consumer surplus of Rp5,640,874 per visit. Strategic analysis using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and SWOT framework positions the area in Growth Quadrant I, recommending strategies focused on premium ecotourism development, carbon trading implementation, and integrated buffer zone management. This research provides a replicable methodology for post-mining ecosystem restoration valuation and demonstrates the economic viability of conservation-based land use in degraded landscapes.
